Example CFD Consultancy Projects Summary
Below are examples of CFD Consultancy Projects performed by 80/20 Engineering which are described in more detail on the linked pages.
This Gas Control Valve has a large number of moving components that are designed to activate at different times through the patient’s breathing cycle and CFD enabled the complete transient cycle to be studied. (Features: Simerics-MP)
Our engineers first started using CFD with water applications in 1994. Since then, we have taken a leading role in introducing CFD technology to the UK water industry. Some of the project experience performed using CFD for water companies is shown.

Managing the gas flow paths within and around the heat exchanger tubes efficiently can substantially reduce operating temperatures and eliminate the likelihood of ‘hotspots’. Using CFD simulation, a complete three-dimensional thermal map can be obtained from any operational conditions and once a concept is selected further simulations can be carried to refine the idea or test the impact of manufacturing or material specification constraints.

Thermostatic Valve – Reducing Pressure Loss
CFD techniques helped this manufacturer really understand why their valve had certain flow behavioral characteristics. The fluid flow paths could be easily visualized so that re-circulation and high-pressure gradients could be identified. (Features: Simerics-MP)
LED Lighting – Heat Sink Design
As LED’s have been playing an ever-increasing role as an alternative to conventional lighting solutions, this has led to the need for the research and development process to focus far more time on efficient design of the cooling strategies. The more power the LED can convert to light the better the performance will be.
In order to help validate the performance of a be-spoke peltier cooled refrigeration solution, as quickly as possible, for a new concept design, ECH commissioned 8020 Engineering to provide some additional consultancy assistance to their ongoing development activity.
Due to the size and complexity of these geometrical models, cell counts of 50 million plus are routinely used. Through an initial development of an evaporator component, over 60 design iterations using the virtual CFD model were carried out in less than 6 weeks using Simerics-MP.
A Paper entitled ‘Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling of a Hydraulic Radial Piston Motor’ was presented at the International Conference on Mechanics, Building Material and Civil Engineering (MBMCE 2015), Guilin, China with joint authors from Bosch Rexroth and Leicester University. (Features: PumpLinx)
The whole fuel pump assembly needed simulating in 3D, with the majority of the fluid components in motion, in order to really understand the source of the fluid dynamics effects taking place in detail. (Features: PumpLinx)
After extensive research and evaluation further pump companies select Simerics-MP as their CFD solution of choice, as provided by 80/20 Engineering, due to its ability to model the dynamic behaviour of the pump (transient) including cavitation with a high degree of accuracy and solution turnaround times that cannot be matched by other CFD tools.
Cost Cutting with Pump Performance Prediction
Prediction of prototype performance is often a critical requirement for success. New designs have typically required expensive and time-consuming hardware testing. However, virtual testing with CFD has the potential to reduce or even replace hardware testing, but only if it can predict performance with sufficient accuracy, ease-of-use and speed. This article considers three case studies where CFD testing has been proved effective. (Features: PumpLinx)
Leading pump and design manufacturer carried out an evaluation of turbo-machinery design tools that could assist their development process and selected CFturbo for this purpose. (below)
The development goal for this project was to assess what design changes could be made to the existing washer pump assembly to increase the pressure output by at least 10%. During the project, various simulations were run illustrating potential performance improvement in relation to certain manufacturing cost constraints. (Features: Simerics-MP)
Our team first started using CFD with rotating flows in 2003. Since then, our engineers have taken a leading role in introducing this technology to the European market. This has involved performing many fluid machinery consultancy projects, working on validation cases and supporting customers with this capability.
As a complement to our CFD expertise, 80/20 Engineering also has extensive experience across a range of structural FEA application. This means our clients are able to come to us for advice and guidance on all their product performance issues.
At 80/20 Engineering, we have access to the resources and skills to carry-out the simulation of virtually any product performance issue from fluid-structure interaction to modeling of multiphase flows for example:
These example project arise from on and off-site, application of simulation technology.
